Description
TThe educational ROCKTEST is a hand-operated compression testing system capable of performing uniaxial and triaxial compression tests on specimens. Tests performed allow the user to determine strength and elastic properties, shear strength at different confining pressures, angle of shearing resistance and cohesion, modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, point load and splitting tensile strengths. Optionally, an acoustic velocity fixture can be added to propagate compressional (P) and shear waves (S1/S2) through a rock specimen at overburden pressure and ambient temperature. Compression and two orthogonal shear wave velocities as well as dynamic elastic constants can be determined. The system can be configured with uniaxial compression platens, triaxial cell with or without acoustic platens, axial and lateral strain gauges, point load fixture and indirect tension Brazilian fixtures. The device is specifically designed to teach students the principles of rock mechanics in a clear and efficient manner. The short duration of the experiment reinforces the practicality of this apparatus in an educational setting.
