AHC-series Acoustic HOEK cell

ASTM D2845

Description

The triaxial acoustic HOEK cell is designed to transmit compressional (P) and shear waves (S1/S2) through rock samples under conditions of overburden pressure and room temperature. The sample must be positioned between two adjustable loading pistons and compressed using a load frame. A specialized sleeve serves to isolate the sample from the hydraulic confining fluid. A distinct advantage of this setup is the ability for quick sample loading and unloading, eliminating the need to drain the confining fluid or remove the core sleeve. The cell consists of a hollow steel cylinder with screw-on, detachable ends, along with two high-resistance spherically seated acoustic loading platens, a pair of female spherical seats, and an isolating sleeve. To apply the axial force to the sample, an external compression testing frame is necessary. Additionally, a high-pressure pump is required to produce the confining pressure. Three acoustic HOEK cell models are available. Each model is designed to accommodate specimens of various diameters, ranging from 21.5 mm to 101.6 mm. Polyurethane sleeves can be replaced with Viton sleeves for high-temperature applications. When equipped with a Viton sleeve and a heating jacket, the acoustic HOEK Cell provides an efficient and reliable solution for performing triaxial tests at elevated temperatures.

Benefits

Simultaneous Mechanical & Acoustic Testing – Enables transmission of compressional (P) and shear waves (S1/S2) under confining pressure, allowing full thermo-mechanical and dynamic rock characterization.

Fast Sample Handling – Quick loading and unloading without draining the confining fluid or removing the sleeve reduces downtime and increases laboratory efficiency.

Wide Specimen Range – Three available models accommodate sample diameters from 21.5 mm to 101.6 mm, offering high versatility.

High-Temperature Capability (Optional) – Polyurethane sleeves can be replaced with Viton sleeves and combined with a heating jacket for reliable elevated-temperature triaxial testing.

Robust & Precise Design – High-strength steel construction with spherically seated acoustic platens ensures accurate load alignment, durability, and repeatable results under high overburden pressure.
